Lack of sleep: can be compensated or not?

Achieving goals at any cost is a concept that has become popular in recent years. Some popular coaches teach people to set big goals and move towards them despite obstacles. Their followers take their words literally and sacrifice much for their success. But such a pace of life destroys life and is reflected in health.

First of all, people sacrifice their sleep. As a result, they fall into sleep debt. If these are isolated cases and you then give yourself time to rest and restore strength, then this cannot harm you. But if you regularly lack sleep, the debt only increases, and it will be very difficult to pay off. An adult should sleep at least 7 hours a day, and even not sleeping a few minutes each day can disrupt work your body.

Scientists believe that people who sleep less than 7 hours a day have a lack of sleep and this can lead to health problems. Even if you are trying to pay off your sleep debt on the weekends and allow yourself to sleep more than 12 hours on Saturday and Sunday, it will not help your body regain the strength lost due to lack of sleep during the workweek.

The idea of working exhausting all week and then sleeping all weekend sounds tempting, but scientists argue that such a regime is dangerous to health. In addition, as a result of research, scientists have found that only one in five people can offset sleep deprivation using prolonged sleep at the entrance, provided that the lack of sleep was not too much.


Reducing your sleep time by even half an hour will affect your overall health. But besides the duration of sleep, you must remember that the best hours for recuperation and energy are between 11 pm and 5 am. Therefore, sleeping for a long time on the weekends will not help you as you will be using the wrong time to sleep.
Research has shown that people who try to pay off sleep debt on weekends have health problems such as:

  • chronic fatigue;
  • weight gain;
  • increased blood sugar;
  • transmission;
  • emotional exhaustion.

Therefore, if you are trying to make up for your lack of sleep over the weekend, you should be aware that it will not help you recover the lost health.

Lack of sleep is a very serious challenge for your body. Chronic sleep deprivation affects nearly every system in your body.

First, the hormonal system suffers in the first place. Some hormones are released during a certain phase of sleep and if you miss it, it leads to the failure of the entire system.

Second, the debt of sleep affects blood insulin levels, which can lead to diabetes.

Thirdly, the cardiovascular system needs adequate and quality sleep. Sleep debt can cause strokes or other heart conditions.

Fourthly, your libido depends on your energy level and the work of the hormonal system. If you don’t get enough sleep all the time, then your sex drive decreases or disappears altogether.

Fifth, lack of sleep leads to the transmission and, as a result, weight gain. Therefore, if you are trying to lose weight, but it does not go away despite your best efforts, then you may need to pay your attention to the mode and quality of sleep.

And sixth, lack of sleep is the cause of psychological illness. Irritability, depression, increased levels of anxiety are a consequence of lack of sleep.
