There are about 13,000 football players in college football’s top division, the Football Bowl Subdivision. No other major American sport has so many athletes, and most of them remain anonymous despite being the lifeblood of a sport beloved by millions. That means it’s a public service to highlight some of the best college football players in the country, especially those who won’t make headlines as Heisman Trophy candidates (because they play the wrong position or for the wrong team).
The 2022 college football season kicks off with “Week 0” on Saturday, Aug. 27. The first kickoff is still a few months out, but it’s not too early to start learning who’s who: Here’s a small selection of the best and most fun college football players to track in the months ahead.
